How to Draw an Electronic Angel Working up an Image of a Girl - Final Result

Step 1

Open the photo you would like to work up in Photoshop. Duplicate background and abstract the girl silhouette from the background to make the process of editing qualitative and more convenient. I used Extract Filter (Filter>Extract). Then I edited it with Eraser tool and History Brush tool. Select layer with background and paint it over with black.

Step 2

Make the picture more hard. In Levels (Ctrl+L) move the right slider to the left for a quarter. Then pick up large soft 250px Eraser tool and make a stroke in the right part of the image to make the right side of the silhouette half-transparent. You should slightly touch the back and the wings.

Step 3

Choose background layer. Create a New Layer and draw a kind of radiance or shine on it. Choose Aurora Brush tool and make a stroke starting in the upper right part of the canvas going down to the lower.

Step 4

Choose layer containing the sihouette of our girl. Create a Text Layer and fill it with black numbers 1 and 0 interchanging randomly. Use any font sized 12px.

Step 5

Duplicate Layer and make text with the code grey (#5a5a5a). Duplicate Layer one more time and make the text of the last Text Layer of white color (#ffffff).

Step 6

Choose layer with the angel silhouette and select Color Range (Select>Color Range). In prompt window select shadows and press OK. Make visible the first Text Layer with black text. Rasterize it. Inverse selection and press Del. Add Clipping Mask (Ctrl+Alt+G).

Step 7

Repeat the procedure described in Step 6 for the second Text Layer containing grey-coloured text. Choose Midtones in Color Range .

Step 8

Repeat the procedure described in Step 7 for the last Text Layer containing white-coloured text. Choose Highlights in Color Range.

Step 9

Merge text layers. Choose large soft 250px Eraser tool and make a stroke in the left part of the image, so that the numbers would smoothly dissolve and disappear. Now use a little smaller Eraser brush to erase certain areas on the cloth of our angel-girl. Set Opacity 66%.

Step 10

Draw the numbers on the fingertips. Use Text tool to draw white numbers sized 6px. Add Clipping mask. Rasterize layer and use mild 150px brush to erase the areas above the wrists. Now erase the numbers from the cloth using small Eraser brush.

Step 11

Add some Outer Glow to the layer, set Opacity 84% and Fill 64%.

Step 12

Create a New Text Layer with numbers as in Step 4 and hide it. This time you should make the text white. Use Pen tool (Paths selected) to select an area which will optically prolong the wings.

Step 13

Right Click on it, make selection, inverse selection and feather selection (5px). Now make the hidden Text Layer visible and press Del.

Step 14

Add Outer Glow, set opacity 70% and Fill 79%.

Step 15

Duplicate Layer with wings, move it 1px up and right, set Opacity 52% and Fill 12%.

Step 16

Now add some details for the background and create the general appearance of the picture. Choose hinder layer containing the strokes and duplicate it.

Step 17

Draw simple white lines on the background. Create a New Layer and use Elliptical Marquee Tool to make selection which goes outside of the canvas. Then Right Click on it and add white 2px stroke. Now, likewise, make one more selection and 5px stroke.

Step 18

Add more white lines, spots, and tracery for the background. Create a New Layer and draw fine silhouettes using Ornamental brushes. I used Swirlsandseeds brush and brushes_by_hawksmont.

Step 19

To reach more striking effect add some more white strokes above the girl’s head which symbolize the divinity of a creature on the image :). Create a New Layer and send it to front. Use Universe Brushes to make the picture look more interesting.

Step 20

Draw the nimbus. Create a New Layer. Use Elliptical Marquee tool to make a selection 117×60px above the girl’s head. Transform selection (set -18deg). Then Right Click on selection, select Stroke. Choose white, 4px. Add Outer Glow.

Step 21

Make the inscription. It’s going to be a simple word “Angel” with Outer Glow added to it.
