Print advertisements - is one of the most interesting kinds of advertisement known. It attracts your attention by means of interesting effects and bright, clever and striking slogans. One of those attracted my attention lately. We often notice interesting prints in different places. The good and reasonable combination of the idea and its clever realization brings striking effect. From time to time, when I see interesting prints, I think that it is possible to make something resembling those at home using Photoshop. My last impression is this advertisement:

I found out that this advertisement has been made by the team Stanescu/Dumitrescu/Pilat for the Mccann Erickson Agency. This print won the 8th edition of AdPrint festival in the nomination Best Use of Copywriting. So, I decided to create something of that sort and make a detailed step-by-step instruction of my work. My aim was to create special mood, which is slightly alike with that seen in original, and texture using Photoshop tools. Here’s the result:

Pencil Shading Effect
In this article I’ll show you how to make a perfect effect from your photo.
You need Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and five minutes. Let’s start.
Step 1.
Open your photo and duplicate background layer (apply Layer > Duplicate Layer). Now choose “Background copy” layer. Choose Elliptical Marquee Tool and make an elliptical selection. Go to channels palette and crete a new channel (Alpha 1).
Step 2.
Apply Select > Feather with the following settings: Feather Radius->45px. And apply Edit > Fill...(White) or press ALT+Del. Now add some noise, apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise with the following settings: Amount->25, Distribution->Uniform, Monochromatic->ON. Apply Filter > Brush Strokes > Angled Strokes with the following settings: Direction balance-> 10, Stroke length->44, Sharpness->10.
Step 3.
Go to layers palette and choose “Background copy” layer. Now apply Select > Load Selection with the following settings: Operation->New selection, Channel->Alpha1. Apply Select > Inverse and press Del.
Step 4.
Choose “Background” layer. Choose Elliptical Marquee Tool and make an elliptical selection. Go to channels palette and crete a new channel (Alpha 2). Apply Select > Feather with the following settings: Feather Radius->20px. Apply Select > Inverse and then apply Edit > Fill..(White). Now add some noise, apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise with the following settings: Amount->8, Distribution->Uniform, Monochromatic->ON. Apply Filter > Brush Strokes > Angled Strokes with the following settings: Direction balance-> 83, Stroke length->44, Sharpness->10.
Step 5.
Go to layers palette and choose “Background” layer. Now apply Select > Load Selection with the following settings: Operation->New selection, Channel->Alpha 2. Apply Select > Inverse and fill it (apply Edit > Fill..(White)). Now apply Select > Inverse again and Edit > Fill..(White). You will get a pencil shading photo like mine.
And that’s it.
Magnifier
In this tutorial we will learn how to create a magnifier effect for certain parts of your photos using Photoshop 7.
Step 1.
Open a photo and duplicate the layer (apply Layer > Duplicate Layer…). Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool and make a round selection (holding Shift). Press Ctrl+Shift+I to inverse a selection and then press DEL. Apply Select > Deselect.
Step 2.
Apply Edit > Free Transform… and make a selection larger. Apply Select > Load Selection… and then apply Filter > Distort > Spherize (Amount->65%). Apply Select > Deselect. Apply Filter > Render > Lighting Effects… with the following settings:
Step 3.
It’s time to make a magnifier effect for the photo. Apply Select > Load Selection… and then create a new layer. Apply Select > Modify > Expand (3 pixels) and fill this selection with any colour (apply Edit > Fill…). Apply Select > Modify > Contract (5 pixels) and press DEL. Choose Line Tool (weight->5px) and draw a short line. And that’s it. See how you applied a magnifier effect to the photo using Adobe Photoshop 7:
Camera Recorder Effect
Step 1.
Open the photo. Change the colour of the photo (press Ctrl+U and use the following settings: Colorize->ON, Hue->128, Saturation->32, Lightness->-14).
Step 2.
Now you have to create “scan lines”: create a new 4X2 pixels document and set the Zoom Slider on 1600%. Paint the upper pixels by black and the lower pixels by white colours. Press Ctrl+A and apply Edit > Define Pattern.
Step 3.
Now go to your photo and create a new layer. Press Ctrl+A and fill the photo by your pattern. Set the Opacity->20% and press Ctrl+E.
Step 4.
Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool and make the round selection. Drag this selection in a new document with the black background. In my case I added some effects. And that’s it.
